OBEDIENCE & PROTECTION
This discipline is a showcase of precision, teamwork, and control. Dogs and handlers navigate through a series of obedience exercises, demonstrating mastery of commands, focus, and responsiveness. While this service typically exists in the context of organized dog sports and competitions, many people enjoy this as a fun way to enhance their training and build the bond they share with their pet dogs as well!
Brent, now semi-retired from IGP, is a Nationally Certified GSSCC Helper and has transferred his focus towards helping people develop their dogs in IGP, PSA and Personal Protection. Drawing from his expertise as both a professional dog trainer and a high-level competitor/helper in the sport, he now dedicates his skills to guiding handlers and their dogs toward their own accomplishments.
IGP: a dog sport that tests a dog’s skills in tracking, obedience, and protection work. Formerly known as IPO or Schutzhund, this sport is popular sport among working dog breeds like German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and others trained for police and military work.
PSA: is a competitive dog sport that tests a dog’s obedience and protection skills in real-world scenarios. It is known for its high level of difficulty, requiring strong nerve, control, and drive from both the dog and handler.
Personal Protection: Unlike sport-based protection (like IGP or PSA), personal protection dogs are trained for real-world defense scenarios rather than competition

A skilled decoy is not merely a participant in protection scenarios; they are a crucial component in shaping a dog’s behaviour and responses, and ensures the safety and well-being of the dog in a controlled environment. Their clear communication with the dog enhances the training experience, reinforcing the handler’s cues and contributing to effective learning.
The importance of selecting a knowledgeable and skilled decoy cannot be overstated, as their proficiency directly influences the success and well-being of both the dog and the handler in the intricate world of protection training.
